The Factory of the Future

In different countries, from rustbelt America to rustic China, a chorus of voices is urging government to boost domestic industry so that it makes more stuff. The trouble is, according to a study published in Britain on October 30th, most policymakers don’t understand modern manufacturing, let alone how technology is transforming it. Read More.

Jackson, Michigan Training Program Recognized as National Leader
(Jackson, MI) – The Office of United States Secretary of Labor announced on Tuesday that The Academy for Manufacturing Careers (AMC), a partner organization of the Jackson Area Manufacturers Association and The Enterprise Group of Jackson, Inc. has been selected as a 21st Century Registered Apprenticeship Trailblazer and Innovator.
The recognition is based upon an Apprenticeship program’s past innovations, strategies and partnerships in delivering premier training initiatives and their impact on Registered Apprenticeship programs for the 21st Century.
Scott Halstead, Vice President, Aerospace Business Unit at Advance Turning & Mfg., Inc. and Chairman of the Board of Review for the Academy for Manufacturing Careers said, “We are humbled with the receipt of this award. It truly reflects the dedication and hard work of the Academy staff and is a reminder that the Academy is focused on doing the right things. While millions will leave the work force in the next 10 years, it is our hope that we can prepare their replacements with skills not taught in the conventional educational system. The Academy has worked with the youth of our community for several years and has provided opportunities in the classrooms, at camps and in our member’s manufacturing facilities, to instill interest in manufacturing and the abundant career opportunities that it provides which in the end has led to the feeding system of the apprenticeship programs. We are reminded daily of the lack of a skilled work force in our country as well as our local community and this award simply reminds us of the Academy’s foundation and focus to help prepare our future workforce regardless of age.”
Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis has invited representatives from the Academy for Manufacturing Careers and the Jackson Area Manufacturers Association to join her in Washington, D.C. on August 1, 2012 to receive the award and commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the signing of the National Apprenticeship Act.
The Boards, volunteers and staff of all The Enterprise Group partner organizations recognize the importance of a quality workforce and are continually striving to develop programs that meet the need of business and industry into the 21st century. Since the inception of the program nearly nine years ago 51 apprentices have graduated and there are currently 108 individuals enrolled in the apprenticeship program. In addition, over 600 youth and 5,000 adults have received training through the Academy
For more information about the award or the Academy for Manufacturing Careers, please contact Annette Norris, Director at 517-782-8269 or visit www.academy4mfgcareers.org.
